Fusion of the Old and New

This was a very popular song when I was a child. While growing up, I enjoyed this video due to the Peruvian pan flutes and when sitting in class, discussing Peruvian pan flutes, this song immediately popped into my head. I think it correlates to the topic of traditional Peruvian music because of the pan flutes in the background, which are essential to the indigenous music of Peru. This video also fuses the traditional elements with more contemporary ones by incorporating a fluid melody, guitars, an accordian and vocal. Enjoy guys!!!!

  1. While watching this video it is extremely entertaining I feel as though while shooting the video if this footage isn't from live shows the artist was trying to get the image of an American/ British rock star while playing. The song is extremely catchy and I found the accordion to be very important to the song. Another image that this would bring to mind is that this video seems like a late 1980's early 1990's music video and that was refreshing.

  2. Te fuiste de mañanita...

Love this song. Powerful lyrics and an extremely catchy beat. Carlos Vives is a good example of how modern music is fused with traditional. Although most of the roots to his music is Colombian, it still has some Peruvian roots as well.

I wish I had hair like that. I'd feel like a boss all day everyday.

  3. I agree with what everyone else said, this song is very catchy as well as the powerful lyrics that go with them. I can definitely see how the old traditional styles of music are fused in with the new modern style of music. Each instrument being used in the song is very distinct, I can definitely hear the accordion, guitar, and Peruvian pan flutes throughout the song. It seems like each instrument is given a solo to really show off the power of the instrument. I liked how the main person playing the pan flutes was a woman because it seems like men are the ones who play most instruments, so it's a nice change. Definitely like this song, great pick!

  4. I too, love this song! Carlos Vives was always playing in our family car when I was growing up! My mom used to say that she wanted me to learn how to play the accordion because of him lol But as Jude said, Carlos Vives is a very good example of mixing the old with the new. As we discussed very early on in the semester, many times we are not inclined to listen to the music our parents or grandparents listened to. This in turn, causes us to miss out on very important cultural aspects of Latin America. However, with artists like Carlos Vives who incorporate the old and the new, we can get a little bit of that "old" culture back. It's a win, win!
