Lady Gaga Mariachi

This video of Lady Gaga performing a Mariachi rendition of her song "Born This Way" became somewhat of a viral hit earlier in the year. To celebrate her birthday, she joined Jose Hernandez and his Mariachi Sol De Mexico band at a Mexican restaurant in Los Angeles. In this video you can see the traditional outfits and string instruments (like violins), used to turn this American pop hit in to a Mariachi-style tune. This just goes to show how versatile the Mariachi sound is is and how it can be applied to almost any song or genre--even Lady Gaga's "Born This Way."

  1. It's always cool to see how certain artists alter their songs to accommodate certain genres of music. I remember stumbling onto a video of singer Robert Plant doing reggae versions of classic Led Zeppelin songs of his. You could tell what song it was, but you could also notice the different instrumentation and tempo that made it different from the original. Being able to recognize a genre through musical qualities like that proves that the musical genre, whatever it may be, has its own identity.

  2. I like this. Sometimes I enjoy when contemporary artist change their popular music to fit a different genre, especially one like this where it is completely out of its element. It really shows how versatile mariachi music can be, and how it has the possibility to fuse with other genres and styles of music as well.

  3. Haha this is great! I agree with Jianna. I love when artists join together with artists from other genres even if it is from impromptu performances like this one. It's something that we see a lot in Latin music too. For example, one of my all time favorite songs from Gilberto Santa Rosa (a salsero) and Don Omar (a reggaetonero)- Los Hombres Tienen la Culpa. Or even Aventura's La Curita- a bachata group singing a salsa. In this way artists are able to show off their full range of talents.
