Mariachi

We spoke a lot about the history of Mariachi groups, and how they transformed from rural to urban. The style of the music got modernized, the clothing changed, the groups got larger, and new instruments were introduced. Some of the instruments include the violin, harp, bass drum, trumpet, 6 stringed guitar, guitarron and vihuela. In the video you can see a large group of mariachis in their outfits playing various instruments. Its kind of set up like a festival/carnival type thing where the mariachi play down the streets and the people sing along with them and enjoy themselves. It definitely shows how the people connect with mariachi music and how it is the music of Mexico.

  1. I missed this class, but I found the article very interesting. This isn't my favorite type of music, but I definitely found an interest in the way it came about. How it was influenced by previous music and became modernized in its style and its look. There is a lot going on in these songs as far as the instrumental aspect. The musicians use a range of instruments, and have more musicians then any previous bands that they were influenced by, and yet the music flows with a very in sync and modern sound. The music follows that same Spanish culture of making very upbeat and enjoyable sounds for their audience.
    Thanks for sharing!!

  2. Thanks for posting. It's definitely interesting to see how Mariachi can thrive anywhere--from the streets to concert halls. You can see both examples in this video and in many of the clips we've watched in class. Not many genres translate so well regardless of where you put them. Obviously the Mariachi performed in bars and restaurants differs from the more polished sound heard in concerts, but the essence remains the same.
