La India "Dicen Que Soy"

La India is a very popular Latina salsa singer from Puerto Rico. Her music is known world wide, and she has both won, and been nominated for numerous Grammy awards. This song "Dicen Que Soy" is one of my favorites by her. This genre follows the more 'contemporary' definition of Salsa music. This song is from her first solo album as a female salsa recording artist, in the early 90s. I remember hearing a lot of her singles from this album as a child. Even though her vocal style is different from other salsa artist, the background instruments are still the same. This song includes the guido, congas/timbales, claves and the cowbell. I think this song is great example of how the genre of 'salsa' has evolved over time and changed in terms of how vocals and tempo are used.

  1. Thanks for sharing!! I LOVE this song. It's kind of ""popy." I'm not a huge fan of Salsa style music, but I could definitely listen to this song over and over. I looked her up, and found that her name meant "La Princesa de la Salsa," which I think is very fitting because she brings a new spin onto the genre of salsa - and I believe she does this to reach a younger generation. You should check out the song 'Breaking Night' by her, its also really good!

  2. she keeps a beautifully powerful voice for being a cigar smoker. (kidding) This is definitely a good example of evolution in Salsa. There are still so many traditional elements while the evidence of some other musical influence is there. The song still seems to tell a story and send a message and is appropriately climactic while still very consistent. Good Pick!

  3. La India has such an amazing voice. Growing up, no one compared to her, and to this day, no one does. This is due to the fact that her voice is very distinct, and able to flow with the rhythm, which was different in a male dominated field.
